G.M. SHAWYER

shawyerIn 1922 Geoffrey Maurice Shawyer was born in the Uganda Protectorate, son of Charles William and Fanny Gertrude Shawyer. The family came back to England when he was nearly two, living in Wanstead, Essex. From Essex they moved to St Maur, Yelverton. He had a brother, Richard.shawyer-cemetery

Geoffrey was educated at Sherborne School between 1936 and 1939. On leaving school he joined the 2nd Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Regiment (KRRC). Lieutenant Shawyer (194913) spent most of his time in Europe. He was killed on August 16 1944 during the Western Europe Campaign, aged 22.

He is buried in Plot: IV. C. 11. of the Banneville-la-Campagne War Cemetery, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.

In his will he left his entire estate of £898 15s 8d to his father, a retired civil servant. He is commemorated by a gravestone in the Banneville-la-Campagne War Cemetery, on the Buckland Monachorum War Memorial, Crapstone and on the framed parchment in St Paul’s Church, Yelverton.
