A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF YELVERTON PEOPLE KILLED
BY ENEMY ACTION DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR

August 2013

In 2013 we decided that we ought to know more about the men whose lives the Hall commemorates and asked the Local History Society for some help. As a result we received a detailed biography from Peter Hamilton-Leggett of each of the nine Yelverton residents killed on active service during the conflict.

Their stories are compelling, representing almost a microcosm of World War II. As each man lost his life in a different theatre of war, so they rest variously in France, Italy, Athens, Iraq and Singapore, or the ships they went down in. It seemed only right that they should be commemorated in the village which was their home to ensure that their name and their sacrifice would not be forgotten.

So on Sunday 8th June 2014 the Sunday following the 70th anniversary of D-Day, a plaque was dedicated in the Hall Foyer by the Reverend Captain Gary Shirley
