YELVERTON BOWLING CLUB

The club began in 1925 when R Robinson Rodd (chairman), Commander J Creber (Hon Treasurer) and Archie Langton & J H Bailey (joint hon secretaries) got together to take over the lease of the defunct British Legion Bowling Club whose green was outside the Devon Tors Hotel. A letter sent to Archie Langton suggested that “an offer of £25/£30 for the fence complete, bowls (16), jacks (2), mats (4), lawn mower and sundries would be about the mark, and at that far below the cost today” [1925]. His reply is not known.

Just after the War Mr Wilson refused to renew the lease as the ground was now needed in connection with the Devon Tors Hotel. The War Memorial Field was now in use so the club decided that a move would be a good idea. Using the old pavilion as a club house they set about constructing a new green. Work began in 1950 when the tennis courts were removed and the area levelled and re-seeded. By 1953 all was ready.

In 1993 the old pavilion was demolished and an extra piece of land was leased from the War Memorial Recreational Field Trust. The new club house was finished in 1994.
